The American Mathematics Contest or AMC-10 is one of the three levels of the AMC test for grades 9 and 10. AMC-10 is a 75-minute exam with 25 multiple-choice items. It covers secondary school mathematics, including elementary algebra, basic geometry, area and volume formulas, elementary number theory, elementary probability, and pre-calculus concepts. Students will be scored 6 points for every correct answer, 1.5 points for items left blank, and 0 points for incorrect answers. The top 2.5% of the competitors with about 100 to 115 points will be qualified for American Invitational Mathematics Examination or AIME.
AMC-10 is offered twice per year, which is a different set of questions. In the recent AMC-10 held last November 2021, the average score of AMC 10A was 59.63, and AMC 10B was 56.57. The result shows a significant drop in the average score from last spring’s result, with an average score of 65.53 for AMC 10A and 62.31 for AMC 10B. This result suggest that the result varies each year. Questions have changed in the past five years and improved with more complex math problems.
