Tractors and riders will not function properly without a compatible transaxle. Most transaxles in the K46 range require the right oil to ensure proper lubrication for your tractor’s vital components. One of the available lubrication products today is the Tuff Torq K46 Oil.

The Tuff Torq K46 Oil is a recommended lubricant for many compatible transaxle models. Several transaxle models in rider and tractor assemblies will run better with the compatible K46 drive fluid.

Most transaxle assemblies require no more than 2.2L of this oil to work; however, larger models might come with a  2.5–3L capacity.

Knowing what works best for your K46 transaxle is essential if you want the assembly to last long. That’s why this article outlines all the vital details about the oil best for Tuff Torq K46 assemblies.

Everything from model information to servicing, maintenance, and much more is in this guide. With all these details, it becomes comfortable to run your rider and tractor assemblies with relative ease!

How to Check the Oil Level and Condition of a K46 Transaxle

Step 1: Remove the transaxle from your tractor/rider

You need to remove the transaxle from your vehicle to ensure easy access to the fill port. Most K46 models have their fill port located beneath the fan and pulley area.

See your tractor’s operational manual for more information on how to remove and reinsert transaxles.

Step 2: Place the transaxle on a level area

Position your transaxle on a secure, level surface. Next, remove the pulley and fan from your unit to access the fill port’s cap (usually black).

Check if the oil is within 20 – 25 mm away from the cap lid. If the oil has gone way below this benchmark, you might need to get it changed.

Replace the fan and pulley after changing the oil with recommended drive fluid for K46 transaxle assemblies.

How to Change K46 Oil in Simple Steps

Step 1: Jack tractor, identify keyway area, and insert jack stand

First, jack the tractor fitted with the K46 from its rear. Ensure you use a jack with the appropriate weight capacity to hold your tractor.

Next, remove the wheels from the rear end of your tractor. Make sure to watch and identify keyways around the loose wheel area.

Most times, these keyways are around the wheel or bottom axle area. You need to remember the keyway position as you’ll have to put the wheel on first before placing the keyway pin.

After that, support the rear of your tractor with an appropriate stand before removing your jack. You’ll need the jack later for your K46.

Step 2: Remove links and pull the rod

Remove the links for reverse and forward from your K46 (usually at the right side of every assembly). Next, take out the pull rod for ‘Free Wheeling’ by pushing a jamb nut at the right-hand side of forward and reverse pull lever rods.

After that, remove the brake link from your K46 (at the left side of your transaxle).

Step 3: Support K46 and remove select bolts and slack belt

Support your transaxle with a jack to remove the essential bolts with ease. Next, remove the single 13mm bolt (front right) and 4 bolts (from the tractor’s base).

After that, lower your K46 a little to slack its drive belt and allow easy removal from your tractor.

Step 4: Remove K46 from the tractor and take out the pulley

Next, remove the K46 from your tractor before taking out its pulley and fan. The assembly will usually be in this order – ring, pulley, spring washer, and fan.

Step 5: Remove the fill cap and turn K46 over to drain oil

Removing the pulley and fan gives you access to the fill cap. Place a pan under the assembly before turning it over to drain all the bad oil out.

Step 6: Fill with oil and assemble your transaxle

Next, add the recommended 5w50 lube (usually 2.2L) to your transaxle before coupling all parts. Make sure to confirm the location of all screws, washers, and components after taking them out.

If you can’t complete the above steps without a mistake, it’s best to consult an experienced technician for such maintenance.
